Los Angeles Car Rental

Los Angeles is a driving city in the literal sense: the distance between Santa Monica and Pasadena is about 25 miles, and there is no single transit line that makes that trip comfortable with luggage. Most visitors end up with a car whether or not they planned on one.

Popular pick-up areas

  • LAX Airport area
Nearly all LAX rentals now run through the consolidated rental facility, reached by shuttle from the terminals.
  • Downtown LA
Convenient if you are staying near the Arts District or Financial District, though overnight parking is usually extra.
  • Hollywood / West Hollywood
Neighbourhood branches tend to keep shorter weekend hours than airport counters.
  • Santa Monica
Useful for coastal trips, but summer traffic on the I-10 into the city can be heavy at the wrong hour.

Local driving tips

  • Traffic peaks roughly 7–10am and 3–7pm on weekdays. A pick-up time outside those windows is worth the wait.
  • Toll lanes on the I-110 and I-10 use FasTrak. Ask the provider how their transponder is billed before you use one.
  • Street parking signage in LA is famously layered — read every sign on the pole, not just the top one.
  • For coastal or canyon driving, a compact is usually easier to park than a full-size SUV.
